Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men in New York State and nationally. The prostate is a male sex gland. It is about the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine to the bladder.
In New York State, more that 14,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 2,000 men die from this disease each year. Almost 75% of the men diagnosed with prostate cancer in New York State are age 65 and over. It is estimated that one in every 5.5 men will develop prostate cancer sometime during his life.
