Early detection is the best protection! Get screened for breast cancer.

Follow the American Cancer Society guidelines for finding breast cancer early in women without symptoms:

  • Women in their 20’s and 30’s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of their regular health exams by a health care provider, preferably every 3 years.
  • After age 40, women should have a CBE by a health care provider every year.
  • Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health.
  • Breast self exam (BSE) is an option for women starting in their 20’s.
  • Women at increased risk should talk to their doctor.
Some warning signs of breast cancer are:

  • New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit)
  • Thickening or swelling of part of the breast
  • Irritation or dimpling of the breast skin
  • Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast
  • Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood
  • Any change in size or the shape of the breast
  • Pain in the area of the breast
Though some of these warning signs can happen with other conditions, it is important to report any of these warning signs, or any other changes in how your breasts look or feel to your health care provider without delay.

The best defense is to find breast cancer as early as possible when it is most treatable.
