- Women in their 20’s and 30’s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of their regular health exams by a health care provider, preferably every 3 years.
- After age 40, women should have a CBE by a health care provider every year.
- Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health.
- Breast self exam (BSE) is an option for women starting in their 20’s.
- Women at increased risk should talk to their doctor.
- New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit)
- Thickening or swelling of part of the breast
- Irritation or dimpling of the breast skin
- Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast
- Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area
- Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood
- Any change in size or the shape of the breast
- Pain in the area of the breast
The best defense is to find breast cancer as early as possible when it is most treatable.
